Why TV Type Makes a Bigger Difference Than Size

Most people assume a bigger TV always costs more to run. That's true within the same technology, but a 65-inch LED can cost less per year than a 50-inch plasma. Here's what actually drives electricity cost.

LED/LCD Most efficient

The current standard. LED backlighting is highly energy-efficient. A modern 55-inch LED draws around 80 watts — less than a single old-style incandescent light bulb. Energy Star-certified LED TVs draw 30–50% less than the already-efficient non-certified models.

OLED Efficient at dark

OLED panels light each pixel individually and switch off for black pixels, using zero power for dark scenes. Average power draw is slightly higher than LED in bright scenes but significantly lower during dark content. For movies in a dark room, OLED is often more efficient than QLED.

QLED Similar to LED

QLED is an LED TV with a quantum dot filter for improved colour. Power consumption is nearly identical to standard LED — perhaps 10–15% more due to the higher peak brightness the backlighting must achieve for HDR content.

Plasma Discontinued

Plasma TVs (discontinued since 2014) drew 3–4 times as much power as a modern LED of the same size. A 50-inch plasma averaged 200–250 watts. If you're still running a plasma, replacing it with a modern LED will typically pay for itself in electricity savings within 2–4 years.

CRT Very old

Cathode-ray tube TVs are a rarity in 2026 but still running in some homes. A 32-inch CRT draws approximately 100–120 watts — more than a 65-inch LED. Replacing a CRT with any modern flat-panel TV reduces energy use by 60–80%.

How to Read Your Electricity Rate and Bill

The calculator defaults to $0.16/kWh — the 2026 US residential average. Your actual rate may be higher or lower. Here's how to find it.

Cheapest states Louisiana (~$0.09), Oklahoma (~$0.10), Idaho (~$0.10). If you're in these states, your actual TV cost is significantly lower than the calculator default.
Most expensive Hawaii (~$0.39), California (~$0.28), Massachusetts (~$0.27), Connecticut (~$0.28). If you're in these states, increase the rate in the calculator — your real cost is much higher.
Find your rate Look at your electricity bill for "Rate per kWh" or "Energy charge." It's usually listed per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Divide your total bill by the total kWh used if the per-unit rate isn't clearly shown.
Time-of-use rates Some utilities charge more during peak hours (typically 4–9pm) — which is exactly when most people watch TV. If you're on a time-of-use plan, your actual TV cost may be 50–100% higher than the standard rate calculation.
Standby power This calculator measures active viewing power only. Modern TVs draw 0.5–2 watts in standby mode continuously. At $0.16/kWh, standby for a full year adds $0.70–$2.80 to your annual cost — minor but real.

The Energy Star Label — What It Actually Means for TVs

Energy Star-certified TVs must consume at least 30% less power than the federal minimum efficiency standard. As of 2026, virtually every major TV manufacturer — Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense — produces Energy Star-certified models. The label is easy to check on Amazon by filtering "Energy Star Certified" under features.

Auto brightness matters more than the label. TVs with automatic brightness limiting (ABL) dim the backlight when ambient light is low. This is the biggest real-world energy saving — a TV that auto-dims can use 30–60% less power in a dark evening room than its rated wattage at maximum brightness.

The rated wattage on a TV spec sheet is measured at full brightness with a specific test pattern. Real-world power consumption when watching TV is typically 40–70% of the maximum rated wattage — meaning the calculator gives a conservative (slightly high) estimate for normal viewing conditions.
