Google Drops Android 17 Beta 2 for Pixel Phones

Google has pushed out the second beta version of Android 17 to Pixel users. This follows closely on the heels of the first beta, bringing fresh tools for developers and fixes for common problems. The update aims to boost privacy, speed up tasks across gadgets, and smooth out user interactions.

Key Updates in This Release

This beta adds several features that help apps work better together and protect user data more effectively.

Better Ways to Handle Apps and Screens

Users can now turn apps into floating bubbles by holding down on their icons in the launcher. On bigger screens like tablets, a new bar lets people sort and switch between these bubbles easily. There’s also a tool called EyeDropper that lets apps pick colors from the screen without needing full access to captures.

Another change improves how touchpads work, making pointer movements feel more like using a mouse by default. Apps can now adjust their layouts based on starting positions with an interactive chooser.

Linking Devices and Networks

A new handoff system allows apps to pass ongoing tasks to other devices signed into the same account. For location services, the update supports precise ranging with ultra-wideband tech that keeps things private. Wi-Fi ranging follows new standards for better accuracy.

Apps can check data plan speeds from carriers to adjust streaming quality.

Focus on Privacy and Core Tools

To guard local networks, apps need a specific permission to access devices on the same Wi-Fi. There’s a new alert for changes in time zones.

For hardware, apps must declare if they use the neural processing unit. The system now supports the latest Unicode standards through an updated library.

One big privacy step delays access to one-time passwords in messages for a few hours to stop unauthorized grabs. Developers should switch to safer methods for handling texts.

A contacts tool now shares only needed info per session, cutting down on broad permissions.

Problems Fixed

Google tackled a long list of glitches in this build. These include:

  • Stopping apps from restarting unexpectedly and fixing screen flickers.
  • Correcting layout shifts in the recent apps view for certain languages.
  • Improving video playback by checking for layer support.
  • Adding missing zeros to clock displays in dim modes.
  • Preventing folders from blocking touches after closing.
  • Halting crashes during app switches, device use, or connections.
  • Fixing hangs after unplugging from car systems.
  • Cleaning up text errors in permission prompts.
  • Placing translation features in the right menu spot.
  • Stopping overlaps in debug scans and sound previews.
  • Cutting extra alerts after updates.
  • Resolving graphics issues on older models.

The update also tweaks indicators for camera, mic, and location to small circles for a cleaner look.

Which Pixels Get It?

The beta works on Pixel models from the 6 series up to the newest ones, like the Pixel 10 line. This covers phones, folds, and tablets powered by Tensor chips.

The build number is CP21.260206.011, with a variant for earlier devices. It packs the February 2026 security fixes and weighs about 550MB on mid-range models.

Steps to Get the Update

Sign up for the Android Beta Program on Google’s site to grab it over the air. If you’re already in, check for the update in settings.

For manual setup, download OTA files or full images from the developer portal. Remember, going back to stable means wiping your device. The full version should land around mid-year.

This beta keeps building on privacy themes like secure data sharing and network controls, while refining how apps use natural language tools for tasks like picking contacts or handling messages.
