TCL is set to release a firmware update for select Google TV models. The update upgrades the operating system to Android 14 and adds HDMI 2.1 Quick Media Switching (QMS) support.

Key Features in the Upcoming Update

The firmware brings several improvements:

  • Upgrade to Android 14 from earlier versions like Android 12 on compatible models.
  • Super Resolution upscaling for better image processing.
  • HDMI 2.1 QMS (Quick Media Switching), which helps eliminate black screens when connected devices change refresh rates.
  • A new HDR conversion option.

This update applies to TVs equipped with the MediaTek Pentonic 700 processor. It prepares the ground for TCL’s 2026 TV lineup, which will include Android 14 from the factory.

What HDMI QMS Brings to Users

HDMI QMS addresses a common issue with frame rate changes. For instance, when a media player like Apple TV 4K switches from 60Hz to 24Hz for movie playback and back again, the TV can adjust without displaying a blank screen. This requires:

  • A direct HDMI connection to the TV (no intermediate AV receiver or soundbar).
  • Compatible source devices that support QMS.

The feature appears in the TV settings under Channels and Inputs > External Inputs, where users can enable it. Note that QMS focuses on refresh rate switches and does not cover transitions between SDR and HDR content. Other brands, including LG and Samsung, have offered QMS support in prior updates.

Rollout and Availability

Reports from TCL user groups on Telegram and discussions on AVForums indicate the update (version 590 in some regions, or v313 in the US) is in preparation. Owners can expect it through the TV’s over-the-air (OTA) system. TCL has not released official detailed notes yet.

For the most current status on specific models, check your TV’s software update section or refer to TCL support resources.
